A Grandpa's Gentle Call
By Brighton Kriser
When I was 16 my mother and step father were having some major marriage struggles and things were not going great at home. Neither of them were active in the church and God was not commonly talked about in our home. Some unfortunate circumstances took place and it became apparent that we needed to leave home and move somewhere else abruptly. Because my Mom kept her life very private, nobody knew what was happening. It was a highly difficult and emotional time.
The day after we left, my Mom got a call from my grandpa who was a very faithful and active member of the church. I couldn’t hear the call but afterwards my Mom got really emotional. She then told me that my grandpa had called to tell her that he had a very strong impression that something was wrong and that he wanted to check in to know how he could help. I asked my Mom if there was any way he could have known what was happening and she assured me that nobody else knew.
Both of us felt overwhelmed with love both from my Grandpa but also from God. It felt like God knew us perfectly in that moment and had sent someone to tell us. It was one of the first moments in my life where I felt the Spirit testify to me that God was there. I also felt a distinct impression that I needed to be worthy so that I could bless my family with that kind of inspiration one day. I’m so grateful that my grandpa was worthy in that moment to bless me and my Mom.
